Welsh Bridge blog: part one

smithfield-road-welsh-bridge-junctionOver the coming weeks local photo journalist, Richard Bishop, will be bringing us regular updates on the Connect2 works currently taking place at the Welsh Bridge/Smithfield Road junction in Shrewsbury town centre.

Here's his first installment...

Took a look at the first phase of Connect2 this morning where things are moving on a pace at the Welsh Bridge/Smithfield Road junction. Work started a few days ago when the old central refuge and bus lane were removed enabling a more fluid traffic flow in that busy part of town.

Over the forthcoming weeks the project will enable the transformation of Victoria Quay entrance, the Welsh bridge and Smithfield Road area featuring new pedestrian and cycle crossings and central refuge with new traffic light signals.

While I was there I took the opportunity to chat to a few local residents about the scheme.

colin-williamsonShropshire Shuffler chairman Colin Williamson said, "I'm very encouraged that the new authority is encouraging all sorts of physical exercise including cycling. We have all become far more aware of our carbon footprints and the ethos of saving the planet while living longer and being fitter is wonderful. I look forward to seeing and using more cycle paths over the next few years."

julie-bennettJulie Bennett said, "I cycle everywhere and its important to be able to get across town safely. I feel that this part of the town (Welsh Bridge/Smithfield Road), is particularly dangerous for cyclists. Also, having to negotiate the side roads puts people off. The continuity from one part of town to the other is important and hopefully this will encourage more cyclists and it would be good to see more families cycling to and from the Quarry."

david-quirkDavid Quirk said, "The Welsh Bridge/Smithfield Road junction is extremely dangerous to negotiate at the moment and the route along Smithfield Road to the railway station is particularly hazardous. There is a lot of traffic and you have to watch out for the cars changing lanes rapidly. Its going to be a lot safer with a dedicated route for cyclists."

gareth-jonesGareth Jones said, "I cycle this way to work at Bodytech everyday. This dedicated cycle route will be a lot safer and a good thing for the town."
