Simon's training diary

Simon Vickers updates us on Ian and his progress training for their London-Paris ride in September...

A few weeks have now passed since Ian and I went on our first training ride, and since then we have had different approaches on our training. Ian has gone to the track in Shrewsbury, something I have never done, while I have returned to regular gym sessions. I see the benefits in both, but which will bring more to the table in our physical development towards our challenge, it would be interesting to know your thoughts.

Saturday 6 March

As for the riding, this week saw my first solo outing, which I found quite daunting and approached with some trepidation. However, I found once I motivated myself to get my backside out of the door those nerves soon disappeared. A 25 mile run was completed in a reasonable time (1 hour 35 minutes). I found myself pushing and pushing. Coming to the end, I could have quite easily cut it short, but chose the extra few miles, so I am really pleased with that.

Now the first solo effort is out of the way, and with the lighter evenings coming in, the opportunities to go from home will be better, only problem is, I set off down Angel Bank when I start, but to get I have to get back up it!!!!

Saturday 13 March

The numbers are increasing, today saw the first run with Ian in Ludlow, along with Kris and Nathan who are experienced riders and work colleagues, or 'workmates', as my son likes to call them. The aim: 25 miles as quickly as possible. The signs were good to start as we were quick out of the blocks, the first 10 miles were certainly quicker than I have gone before.

Ian, however discovered a number of fine beers the night before is not ideal preparation, but to his credit showed great determination to complete the ride, which was 22 miles due to a navigation error along the way.

Saturday 19 March

Originally it was going to be 4 of us out on a ride today, and then there was one. My options: go to the gym and exercise whist watching rugby, or enjoy the sunshine and put on the shorts and helmet, amongst other things. Out of the door and uphill we go leading to a long downhill stretch before climbing all the way back home. (The elevation is pictured below).

Not the longest ride I have done, in fact the shortest at 17.5 miles, but the hardest. I discovered that downhill parts of the route are by no means compensation for the uphill stages.

Other things to have happened is that both Ian and I have registered for the Breewood Cycle ride in Staffordshire, which will be 65 mile run on 11 June, then the Shropshire Highland challenge on 19 June which is 65 miles of hills!

Thank you all for reading and following our progress, and any feedback or advice would be great!

Ian and Simon will be blogging regularly during their training for their ride to Paris. Check back soon to find out how they are getting on.
