Cycling (and walking) to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital and Gains Park

There are a number of 'missing links' in the cycle route network, particularly in the west of the town and Cycle Shrewsbury is keen to improve the cycling (and walking) connections between Copthorne, RSH and Gains Park.

This could benefit a wide range of people including:

  • the large number of staff based at the RSH, Shelton Hospital and Shropshire County Primary Care Trust
  • residents of established residential areas such as Gains Park
  • new residents of the RSH South site (Copthorne Grange, 112 homes) and RSH North site (Edinburgh Drive and Edgecombe Way, 250 keyworker units)
  • school pupils travelling between the secondary schools in Radbrook and Gains Park

Background

In 2007, the former Shropshire County Council commissioned some preliminary design work for walking and cycling improvements in the area around the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.  There were five elements to this commission, described below.

Cycle direction signs indicating quiet routes to the RSH

In Spring 2010, signs were installed to indicate an 'advisory' cycle route linking Shelton Rd cycle track to Mytton Oak Road.  The route uses residential streets that run parallel with the busier Mytton Oak Road; Crowmeole Lane, Crowmeole Drive, Oakfield Road, Kenwood Road.

Mytton Oak Road Toucan Crossing

This project includes:

  • a new signalised crossing for cyclists and pedestrians to the west of the RSH roundabout
  • widening of the path between Mytton Oak Road and Falcons Way to provide a segregated walking and cycling route
  • construction of a new cycle track between the roundabout and RSH access road

This is already a well-used link between Gains Park and Radbrook, and will be particularly useful for children attending schools on Longden Road and employees travelling to the Royal Shrewsbury and Shelton Hospitals.

New housing is now being constructed by Cala Homes on the old RSH south site so the new crossing will also provide a safer route for the new residents to the local health centre and primary school on Racecourse Lane.

Mytton_Oak_RdThe project costs are being shared between Cycle Shrewsbury, Shropshire Council and Cala Homes.

Construction work is due to start on Monday 10th January 2011 and (weather permitting) will last for approximately 5 weeks.  During the construction period, we will endeavour to minimise disruption.  The works will be undertaken by Shropshire Council's term contractors; Peek (signals) and Enterprise (civil engineering).  For more details, please contact Cycle Shrewsbury.

Mytton Oak Road cycle track north side (Racecourse Lane to RSH roundabout)

The Toucan crossing works will include a short section of new cycle track between the roundabout and RSH access road.  Between the RSH access road and Racecourse Lane, the developer of the adjacent land has agreed to provide another new section of cycle track.

Mytton Oak Road cycle track south side (Falcons Way to RSH roundabout and Crowmeole Lane)

Along the frontage of the old RSH south site, a cycle track is being provided by Cala Homes as part of the 'Copthorne Grange' development.  This will link with cycle and walking routes through open spaces within the development, and connect with Falcons Way near Churchill Road.

Crowmeole Lane

Crowmeole Lane is used by many people, including pedestrians and cyclists, and through traffic. It becomes very narrow at the Radbrook bridge, and there is no pavement on this section.

Changes in priority were considered with the aim of making the route less attractive as a through route whilst slowing down traffic on the approach to the bridge. However, there was not enough support for this proposal from the consultation in April 2010, so no changes are currently proposed.
