Cycle Shrewsbury has received additional funding from Cycling England towards our programme to upgrade existing crossings as well as provide completely new crossing facilities.
In 2008, Cycle Shrewsbury funded the new 'toucan' crossing on Telford Way which enables cyclists and pedestrians to use the crossing together.
In 2009, existing signalled crossings at Ditherington and Hereford Road (Meole Brace Retail Park) were upgraded to 'toucan' crossings. Cycle Shrewsbury also helped to fund the new zebra crossing on Sutton Road.
In 2010, new Toucan crossings have been constructed on Monkmoor Road and Old Potts Way (near Asda) and are being considered on Radbrook Road (between Bank Farm Road and Crowmeole Lane) and Mytton Oak Road. Also in the pipeline are proposals for narrowing down the carriageway to make crossing easier at Heathgates roundabout following similar improvements at the Longden Road/ Roman Road roundabout (see below).
The proposals for Old Potts Way went out for consultation in January 2010.
For more details download a plan of the proposals.
Following consultation the proposals were amended to remove the proposed change in speed limit from 40mph to 30mph. Works started in April 2010 and the signals were switched on on 12 May 2010.
Works started during the February half-term to provide improvements for pupils crossing Roman Road. The splitter island was widened on the Meole side of the Roman Road/ Longden Road island, in order to accommodate the large numbers of cyclists and pedestrians who cross every day. The traffic lanes were also be narrowed on the Meole side to make it easier and safer to cross.
Also being trialled at this location is the use of green coloured surfacing to highlight crossing points on all arms of the roundabout. Although cyclists and pedestrians will still give way to traffic, it is intended that the coloured surfacing will make each crossing point more visible to motorists and help to keep them clear of queuing vehicles. The green surfacing work was completed in June 2010.

Plans are also being developed for crossing improvements at Heathgates island, Radbrook Road, Mytton Oak Road and Weeping Cross island.
